A high level whistleblower accused America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of falsifying its reports on global warming. The false reporting allegedly influenced world leaders like former U.S. President Barack Obama and Oscar-winning director David Cameron at the UN climate conference in Paris in 2015. Vital information like the slowing down of climate change was omitted. On the other hand, information like rising temperatures of the world was heavily exaggerated in the reports.
The deliberate manipulation of the reports was in direct violation of the rules of NOAA, Dr. John Bates, the whistleblower, pointed out. Furthermore, the “unverified” data, sculpted by NOAA, spread like wildfire across the world, thanks to multiple media outlets. This caused massive global panic. Political and environmentalists picked up on the issue by shunning policy makers who treated climate change as a hoax.
NOAA: Exaggeration of Global Warming Intensifies the Impact
Bates rebuked NOAA’s report drafter, Thomas Karl, of making “decisions and scientific choices that maximized warming and minimized documentation… in an effort to discredit the notion of a global warming pause, rushed so that he could time publication to influence national and international deliberations on climate policy,” Daily Mail reported. Bates also added that when he tried to point out that the report should be subjected to a rigorous process of fact-checking, his suggestions were overshadowed. Instead, the NOAA insisted that the over-exaggerated report was a “blatant attempt to intensify the impact” of environmental degradation in the conference.
The false report did work in NOAA’s favor, as it shook up the delegations from America, Britain and the EU. It forced all of them to arrive at the decision of reducing their respective country’s consumption of fossil fuels. It also led them to commit to spending £80 billion every year on projects that actively checked climate change.
After the incompetency of NOAA’s presented report was brought into light by Bates, NOAA decided to revise certain information cited on the report. Two of the information that will be altered is the measurements of the earth’s surface and the sea level temperature. This is a disgrace for NOAA, since the alterations came merely 18 months after the publication of their report.
NOAA’s Fake Reports Makes Donald Trump’s Decision Easier
The 2016 U.S. Elections brought forth a world, which is comfortable accepting fake news and made-up information as facts. NOAA’s falsifying of reports is further evidence of the advantages that can be reaped from living in such a world. However, advocating for falsehood can also backfire like it did in this regard.
The big reveal by Bates will only work to reaffirm Donald Trump’s decision to revoke the “green” policies put in place by Obama. Trump has already dubbed global warming as an elaborate conspiracy by China to curb the U.S. economy. It is not long before Trump decides to pull out from the Paris deal, complicating further America’s international relations.
Bates also wrote an article for Judith Curry, where he pointed out the irony of the fact that U.S. environmental scientists are now scrambling to back up data on climate change because they are afraid that the data might vanish under Donald Trump. Bates sarcastically stated that it is ironical that they have found themselves in such a situation. This is because despite much persuasion, the environmental scientists have always detested the idea of formally archiving their findings. And it is precisely their refusal to do so that has landed them in a pickle at present.
