Robin Williams could have played Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” movies or at least have a fighting chance to be the beloved character if things turn out different.
However, because only British actors were being considering in the casting process, he was out of the game right from the start. Nobody of course, can find fault with Robbie Coltrane, who bought the character to life magnificently.
Robin Williams could have been in Harry Potter Movie
Regardless of how things went, it is now quite interesting to note that Robbin Williams really wanted the role for himself and reached out to the team behind the movie about it. He was ultimately rejected, Janet Hirshenson explained to Huffington Post, because there was a “Brits-only”rule at the time.

Despite the rejection, Hirshenson assures that Robin Williams was absolutely regarded in an esteemed light. “Robin [Williams] had called [director Chris Columbus] because he really wanted to be in the movie, but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure,” shared the casting director. “It couldn’t be.”
Robin Williams could have been a good Hagrid
While everyone will agree that the Harry Potter cast turned out truly perfect, nobody can probably say Williams would not have made the character come into life as well.
Robin Williams died in 2014 and all his works have been lauded as successful. Ben Affleck himself credited the actor for his own success in the industry.
In an interview with The Guardian, he shared that his critically acclaimed film Good Will Hunting alongside Matt Damon, was the turning point of his life and all the credit goes to Robin Williams.
Robin Williams changed Ben Affleck’s life
“Most people can’t point to the moment that changed their life in such a dramatic way, but I can,” Affleck shared. “It was the moment that Robin decided to take a flyer on that movie. I’ll always feel a huge debt to him although now I’ll never get to repay it,” he explained.
