While delivering his New Year speech, leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un talked about preparations to test an intercontinental ballistics missile.

North Korea: Testing The ICBM

Jong-un stated that his military is now in the final stages of preparing an ICBM.

He stated that the missile’s goal was to reach the United States. The plan is an extension of the country’s strategy to directly threaten America.

The New York Times said that Jong-un made the declaration on state-run KCTV. While doing that, he boasted about the nuclear developments his country has made.

The nation is normally secretive. However, it is eager to inform the rest of the world its advancements over the past several years. The country demonstrated tests of first-stage and second-stage rocket engines. It also showcased a tightly-packed nuclear warhead.

North Korea performed two nuke tests in underground caves in 2016. Other than that, the nation tested a heat-shield to permit the weapon to securely re-enter Earth’s atmosphere.

North Korea: Its Capability

Arms Control Wonk blog’s expert Melissa Hanham mentioned that Jong-un’s North Korea is indeed on the verge of testing an ICBM.

Ultimately, the country has showcased an 8×8 heavy transporter/erector/launch vehicle. This vehicle is adept in launching an ICBM from anywhere along the country’s 449 miles of paved roads.

It can be said that this particular enhancement could be easily termed as a major development for ICBMs.

Moreover, such measures have already been taken by the United States, Russia and China, all of which have already test-launched an ICBM.

However, it seemed like Jong-un’s nation made the weapon a top priority. He believes that having such weapon would prevent the United States from attacking.

The Sun stated that Jong-un’s Musudan missiles has a range of 3,500 miles. They are capable of hitting U.S. air and naval bases in Guam. These missiles may also strike areas in South Korea and Japan, as well as certain areas of Southeast Asia.

North Korea: Trump’s Reaction And China’s Role

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump entirely dismissed the possibility of North’s ICBM testing. According to him, the test would not happen, as reported by the Washington Post.

“North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won’t happen!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said that Trump in his tweet gave a perceptible warning to North Korea. Moreover, the ministry stated that the tweet shows Trump’s awareness of the importance of the threat.

“Because of our active outreach, President-elect Trump and U.S. officials are clearly aware of the gravity and urgency of the North Korean nuclear threat,” Cho June-hyuck, ministry spokesman, said. “They are maintaining an unwavering stance on the need for sanctions on North Korea and for close cooperation between South Korea and the U.S.”

However, Trump accused China of playing a role in the nuclearization of the North.

According to Trump’s tweet, China has been “taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade.” The president-elect also said that afterwards, China won’t be able to help the North.

In contrast, China is quite disturbed by the statement from the president-elect. The nation argued that it has always been in agreement of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

“China’s efforts in this regard are perfectly obvious,” spokesman Geng Shuang of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

“As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, we have proactively participated in relevant discussions on the North Korean nuclear issue and have jointly passed several resolutions with other parties. This shows China’s responsible attitude.”
