Kristina Rodriguez of North Carolina discovered that in one of her medical records, “lesbianism” was still listed as a disease. It was written along with “anemia” and “situational anxiety.” Her post on Facebook about the shocking discovery had since gone viral.
Lesbianism is a disease for a hospital in North Carolina
Rodriguez, 29, got her medical records during a routine visit to have blood testing done. What was written on the record shocked her. In it, her sexual preference was listed among other diseases. Her initial reaction was to post on Facebook and see other people’s reaction as well.
“If this were listed under sexual orientation up near the top that would be one thing, but I wasn’t aware that being legally married to a same sex partner was a medical condition/problem.” Rodriguez said. “It is rare that I jump up on social media like this, but someone else tell me how this is legal?!” the mother of fifteen-month-old twins wrote. Her Facebook post has been shared more than 200 times.
In an interview with WSOCTV, Rodriguez said that she brought the incident into the spotlight for important reasons. “Lesbianism” under medical problem could really shock anyone, she explained. It could harm anybody’s self-esteem, while making them feel that something is wrong with them. She said she was hoping that with what happened, hospitals consider not putting personal information on medical records.
Those who saw her post suggested for Rodriguez to sue the doctor at the Lake Park Family Practice of Carolina’s Healthcare System. But before she could reach this point, the doctor and a director of the healthcare already contacted her. The hospital authorities were made aware after watching a local channel reporting about the incident.
The hospital released a statement saying that they agree with Rodriguez. The information on her medical records was inappropriate. The statement also highlighted that the hospital respect diversity. At the end, Rodriguez felt the sincerity of the statement.
North Carolina: Homosexuality Removed From DSM
In 1973, homosexuality was formally removed from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), according to the official website of The National Center for Biotechnology Information. It was removed from the second edition of the manual. The removal took place after competing theories were cross checked. Some theories pathologized homosexuality and to others it was normal.
In more alternative theories, like the psychoanalytical theory, Sigmund Freud stated that everyone is born with bisexual instincts. He stated that expressions of homosexuality might act as the phase of developing heterosexuality. “Homosexuality is assuredly no advantage, but it is nothing to be ashamed of, no vice, no degradation; it cannot be classified as an illness; we consider it to be a variation of the sexual function, produced by a certain arrest of sexual development,” Freud said.
