65th Miss Universe History: The title was first used in 1926

The International Pageant of Pulchritude used the title in 1926. The pageant was held every year until 1935. The demise of the pageant came in due to the Great Depression. The fall of the competition came after the other occasions which preceded World War II.

The existing Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills. It was a California-based clothes business and maker of Catalina Swimwear. The business was the sponsor of the Miss America pageant until 1951. The sponsorship ended when title-holder Yolande Betbeze declined to pose for publicity photos wearing one of their swimsuits. In 1952, Pacific Knitting Mills arranged the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, co-sponsoring them for decades to follow.

Pageant Center recounted that the very first Miss Universe Pageant was kept in Long Beach, California in 1952. Armi Kuusela from Finland won but offered up her title, though not formally. She got married shortly before her year was completed.

Until 1958, the Miss Universe title, like that of Miss America, was dated by the year following the contest. Miss Kuusela’s title was Miss Universe 1953 instead of 1958. Given the fact that the Pacific Mills founded the contest, the Miss Universe organization organized and conducted the pageant. Eventually, the Kayser-Roth Corporation took over the Pacific Mills and its subsidiaries. The Gulf and Western Industries later obtained the business.

Miss Universe’s first broadcast

The pageant had its first broadcast in 1955. CBS began relaying the combined Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants in 1960. John Charles Daly hosted the pageant from 1955 to 1966 and Bob Barker from 1967 to 1987. Alan Thicke hosted the pageant in 1988 and John Forsythe in 1989. Other hosts of the pageant were Dick Clark from 1990 to 1993 and Bob Goen from 1994 to 1996.

Donald Trump sold the Miss Universe franchise

According to Variety, Donald Trump struck a broadcasting arrangement with CBS for a few years. From 2003 to 2014, the pageant was relayed in the U.S. on NBC. NBC and Univision dropped the pageant in September 2015 when NBC cancelled all business relationships with the Miss Universe Organization with Trump’s political remarks in June 2015. His remarks were about unlawful migration throughout his project for the presidency of the United States.

As part of the legal settlement, in September 2015, Trump bought out NBC’s 50 percent stake in the business. This made him the company’s sole owner. Three days later, he sold the whole company to WME/IMG. Following the modification of ownership, Fox and Azteca became the main broadcaster of the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. The current president of the Miss Universe Organization is Paula Shugart.
