A state senator from California started calls for the release of Melania Trump’s immigration documents. The senator asked the White House to make an action. This step was taken as part of a larger objection to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Melania Trump and Her Immigration Documents
Berkeley State Senator Nancy Skinner made the call for the immigration related documents belonging to the current first lady. The call was supported by Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. This was a protest made against Trump’s executive order for limiting funds to “sanctuary cities.”
It was discovered in November 2016 that Melania had no proper work visas. This was during the time she was employed as a model after arriving in the United States. She came to the U.S. two decades ago from her home country Slovenia.
“No one in the Trump operation has released any of the documentation to indicate what was the circumstance, or whether she had full legal status,’’ Skinner stated. “We only know they had a lawyer look at whatever papers she chose to give.” In addition, according to Politico, Skinner stated Trump gave his word last August that the current first lady would conduct a press conference on this matter before the election. However, the press conference never took place.
Moreover, Trump’s response is inadequate, Skinner emphasized. She stated that Trump had advocated policies that could put hundreds of thousands of undocumented people in California under the threat of deportation. She added that Trump’s action in terms of Melania’s legal status was completely insufficient compared to his policies.
Furthermore, David Leopold, an immigration attorney and former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, reacted to Skinner’s move. He stated that Skinner’s call is “fair game,” given Trump’s immigration policies. He also stated that if Melania came to the United States to work without the proper work visas, then it was completely fraud.
Melania Trump and Her Visit to the United States
The current first lady started modeling as a child. In 1992, Melania won an international modeling contract after she finished second in a contest. She got her first U.S. work visa in 1996. There was a controversy when Melania’s revealing photos were published and were incorrectly dated. However, in an interview she stated that she had followed every legal step to visit the U.S., said Romper.
Recently, Melania wore a gown designed by an immigrant designer Reem Acra – a move that many people deemed to be contradicting her husband’s stance against immigrants. She wore the glittering golden dress on Thursday in a dinner at Washington’s Union Station. Vanity Fair stated that selecting an Acra gown for the event was a strategic move for Trump. “The First Lady–Elect is wearing the renowned international designer Reem Acra to celebrate the 58th presidential inauguration at a candlelight dinner with her husband, President-Elect Donald Trump, and their supporters,” a Trump spokeswoman said.
