North America

President Donald Trump had a special list of guests for his speech to the Congress on February 28 which was also the Rare Disease Day. One of the guests was a college student with a rare disease, Megan Crowley.

20-year-old Megan Crowley joined First Lady Melania Trump in her seat

Trump invited the 20-year-old Crowley to take a jab on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When Crowley was only 15 months old, the doctors diagnosed that she have Pompe disease, a rare, genetic disorder. The disease is the buildup of glycogen in the body’s cells. The accumulation of the complex sugar on organs, muscles, and tissues will impair the ability to function

Her doctors only gave her six months to live. Her father, John, refused to accept his daughter’s fate. John founded Novazyme Pharmaceuticals to research a cure for his daughter. The company created an enzyme replacement therapy to treat Pompe. John’s son was also born with the same disease. The Crowley children are still undergoing the treatment.

Trump lambasted the FDA, stating that his administration will slash restraints that cause the slow pace of the organization. He believes that by lessening the regulations, there will be more miracles like Megan. However, some experts worry that there will be a low barrier to entry if Trump will cut of 70 to 80 percent of the regulations, resulting in the creation of dangerous drugs.

Three of the guests were families of the victims who died in the hands of illegal immigrants

Aside from Megan, the other special guests also mirrored the speech of the president. Three of the guests are family members of the victims which the undocumented immigrants have killed. Susan Oliver and Jessica David are the widows of Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis.

The two policemen died in the line of duty during a shootout in Sacramento on 2014. The suspect, Marcelo Marquez is currently waiting for his trial in California. The president supports the bill named after the two cops, Davis-Oliver bill.

The bill will reportedly enhance the cooperation between local and state officials to ensure that the undocumented immigrants, as well as terrorists, will be identified and removed quickly. Jamiel Shaw Sr. is a father of the victim of another undocumented immigrant. Jamiel Jr., was a 17-year-old high school football star when he Pedro Espinoza gunned him down in 2008.

Another guest, Denisha Merriweather, a speaker about education policy and tax credit scholarships, joined the first lady in her seat. Trump also invited Maureen McCarthy Scalia, the widow of the deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
