The Los Angeles Lakers are unlikely to make the playoffs again this season. The current playoff drought might lead to a front office shakeup. This is also the main reason why several big-name players like Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook were mentioned in recent Lakers rumors.
The Lakers currently have a promising young core led by D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram. They also have a good young head coach in Luke Walton. However, fans want results, with most of them looking for a deep playoff run.
Lakers Rumors: Davis-Westbrook Combo in Hollywood?
The Lakers young core is still years away from being capable of leading the Lakers to the promise land. There might be huge changes along the way, though. Bleacher Report added fuel to the fire, suggesting that the Lakers might acquire Davis and Westbrook in the future.
Both Davis and Westbrook are represented by Thad Foucher of the Wasserman Media Group. Both players are also unlikely to win a title with their respective teams. Westbrook is carrying a bigger load for the Oklahoma City Thunder after Kevin Durant left. Davis, on the other hand, is doing all he can, but the New Orleans Hornets are still struggling.
One source close to the agent of both players said that there is a chance the agency might find a way to unite Westbrook and Davis in Los Angeles. A Davis-Westbrook pairing will instantly make the Lakers contenders again in the Western Conference. However, acquiring both superstars is easier said than done.
Westbrook is signed until the 2018-19 NBA season, while Davis is in contract until the 2020-21 NBA season. This means the Lakers can only acquire them through trades. It might take a lot of wheeling and dealing before the Lakers get a chance to secure both superstars.
The Lakers have promising young players to offer to the Pelicans and the Thunder. They also have future picks to package in any deal. However, creating an attractive trade package with matching salaries might make it hard for the Lakers to acquire Westbrook and Davis in future trades.
Major Lakers Shakeup on the Horizon
However, Lakers Nation noted that anything can happen moving forward. This will get more interesting in Los Angeles because of the looming changes in the front office. “Although this potential star pairing of Westbrook and Davis may seem farfetched at this point, anything can happen in the years to come, especially if a front office shake-up is expected in Los Angeles,” Lakers Nation pointed out.
Magic Johnson was recently hired as an adviser to Lakers president Jeanie Buss. There is a growing speculation that Lakers executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak might be removed from their respective positions. If that happens, Johnson might make the final call in Los Angeles.
