The Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss appeared at the SXSW event and shared an epic prank on one of the cast members. Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow is notably one of the most favorite characters in the series. Fans knew him with his handsome look and his great hair. However, Benioff and Weiss once ‘threatened’ to destroy his assets for the series.

The producers, along with Maisie Williams, who plays Arya, and Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa, share behind-the-scenes stories from the set. The most interesting bit of their revelations involved the possible demise of Harrington’s face.

Game of Thrones producers set up an elaborate prank on Kit Harrington

The producers went to great lengths just to convince the actor that he will lose his face and hair. They even wrote a different script and sent it to Harrington. Apparently, in season one, the producers gave the actor a script in which the scene involves his face getting destroyed. The script described that a fight with a white walker will scorch Jon Snow’s upper lip and hair.

Benioff stated that they wrote a script just to play a prank on the actor. Aside from burning his face and hair, the script also described the fact that his hand will be burned as well. Benioff stated that Harrington took the news in great stride but the disappointment is obvious in his face. More than the disappointment, Harrington was visibly sad. The producer added “If we had that hair, we’d be pretty bummed to lose it, too. He’s got great hair and a great pout, so we described on the page exactly what his mangled face was going to look like forever.”

Weiss chimed in and said that the gullible actor bought their story and began to mentally prepare himself. Weiss revealed that they convinced the actor by telling him about what HBO wanted. They told Harrington that HBO felt that his looks felt ‘too Disney’ and ‘too Harry Potter-like’. Harrington believed the story that HBO want to make him ugly so that he would fit into the Game of Thrones world. The actor believed everything until Benioff started laughing.

What was the fake script all about?

Fans can find the script inside HBO’s Game of Thrones: Season One & Two book. The script detailed how Jon Snow will burn his face, hair, and hand. During a fight with a white walker, Jon plunges his hand into the fire. He seizes the burning drapes and flings them to the white walker. The flames engulfed both the white walker and Jon. After the fire was out, Jon’s hair was totally burnt down to the scalp.

The fake script also stated that the skin on the top half of Jon’s face melted from the extreme heat. The worst part is that Jon’s face is blistered and pustulant. The script also mentioned that the disfiguration is permanent. It continued to explain, “Jon smiles, his teeth shining brightly in his destroyed face. Mormont, sickened, has to look away.”

Game of Thrones‘ prank gone wrong

Evidently, Harrington was not the only one who was told that his beautiful hair locks will be taken away. Producers also told Nikolaj Coster-Waldau that he will lose his hairstyle. However, he turned the tables. He sent an email to the producers explaining that his hair is an important feature of Jaime Lannister. The actor stated that he will decide on the new style of his hair and send a photograph. A few days later, the actor sent a picture of himself with a buzz cut. This left the producers in a frenzy since the actor had scenes needed to reshoot.

HBO’s lawyers got involved and called Nikolaj. The actor admitted that his hair is still intact and the photo was from five years ago. Unlike Nikolaj, Harrington seemed to resign to his fate. Fortunately for the fans, Harrington get to keep his hair after seven seasons.
