Donald Trump’s choice of cabinet is now complete, and it is the most non-diverse cabinet assembled by any president. It has not been like this since the Ronald Regan presidency that started in 1981. Moreover, the official cabinet will have no Latino for the first time since 1989.
The president-elect’s cabinet is dominated by white males. All selections are still subject to confirmation from the Senate. There were 15 official positions and three members differ from the rest.
One African American man , Ben Carson, was made secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Furthermore, an Asian American woman, named Elaine Chao, was designated as the Secretary of Transportation. A white woman, Betsy DeVos, was picked to run the Department of Education.
No Latinos in Donald Trump’s Cabinet
Trump’s spokesman, Sean Spicer, addressed the absence of Latinos in the top ranks of the administration, Los Angeles Times reported. This was done after the campaign in which the president-elect was often critical of them. However, he also said that the absence of Latinos must not be taken as a breach of his promise to become a representative of all Americans.
“He is here to serve all,” Spicer stated. “The number one thing that I think Americans should focus on, is he hiring the best and the brightest? Is he hiring people who are committed to enacting real change, respecting taxpayers, bringing about an agenda that will create jobs, lift up wages?”
Moreover, the spokesperson said that Trump’s administration will have diversity in gender, thinking and ideology. In addition, he said that it was not just about skin color or anything related to ethnic heritage. When asked if there was no Latino qualified to take a position in the cabinet, Spicer stated that that is something he never said. He added that there are still several positions to be filled in the coming weeks.
The hopes for selection of a Latino in the Trump Cabinet totally vanished on Wednesday, New York Mag reported. Trump selected former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue to become his Agriculture Secretary. Many were hoping that the position will be filled by a Latino to add more diversity to the team.
