In episode 11, titled Turncoat, the team traveled back to 1776 in order to save the United States’ founding father, George Washington from his impending assassination. The Legends will go against their former leader and ally, Rip Hunter, whose memories were manipulated by Eobard Thawne.
Rip Hunter came back in contrast with his good-natured self. He came back with his evil personality. Eobard was able to manipulate Rip because of a mnemonic device that held the latter’s memories. The Legion’s first task for Rip was to assassinate George Washington. In this way, they will be able to stop the existence of the United States in the future.
Whenever the Legions mess something in the past, a time aberration takes place. The latest time aberration alerted the Legends to go back in the year of 1776. However, Rip knew that they would come. In order to stop the Legends, Rip shoots Sara and activates an EMP device which will knock out Waverider’s power while neutralizing Firestorm and Ray’s ATOM suit.
Jax acted as the captain as the team continued to complete the mission. Rip wanted to prove that he had fully and permanently turned to the dark side by murdering Sara. He did not show remorse in killing Sara and seemed to enjoyed the act.
Nonetheless, the series’ writers are not yet done with Sara. Gideon’s deus ex machina revived Sara back to life. Jax wanted to commit revenge for what Rip did. Sara pleaded with Jax not to go through with his plan. The Legends will continue to find a way to bring Rip back to his former self and make sure that the Spear of Destiny will not fall in the hands of the Legions.
