What do you do when you want excitement in your life? Attend a rave? Try bungee jumping? For David Blaine, excitement means attempting to catch a bullet in his mouth.
David Blaine is a professional magician and an endurance artist widely known throughout the world for his crazy and unbelievable magic tricks. There is nothing the man cannot do. And the more life-threatening the stunts are, the more eager Blaine seems to be the one to execute them.
David Blaine – The Ultimate Illusionist
Blaine has done the craziest things more than any normal human being is capable of. He has buried himself in a glass water tank for a week. He has spent three days inside a block of ice. His endurance level also knew no bounds when he went without food for a month, trapped inside a glass case, suspended 30 feet above River Thames.
So when it came down to a special episode of “Beyond Magic” on ABC, which was two years in the making, one expected David Blaine to pull out all stops. Blaine, being the master of the unexpected, managed to shock and awe even die-hard fans.
Celebrities like Drake, Emma Stone, David Beckham, Stephen Curry, Dave Chappelle and Arnold Schwarzenegger were featured in the special episode. Blaine left each one of them with the same expression by the end of his acts – incredulous.
From jamming a ring a down his throat to regurgitating live frogs from his mouth – David Blaine did it all. But he had reserved the blockbuster for the finale – catching a bullet with his mouth.
It is a stunt that, like so many other acts of Blaine, has never been tried by any magician in real life. So naturally, Blaine wanted to be the first to do it.
David Blaine On Catching A Bullet: I Thought I Was Dead
According to The Sun, Blaine has prepared for the act by letting friends shoot him in the stomach as he wore protective vest. But no one could anticipate how dangerous the actual trick could get.
Blaine was fitted with a gum guard that clasped a metal cup, which was supposed to catch the bullet. The cup kept slipping inside his gum guard, which increased the risk factor.
Nevertheless, Blaine held onto the rope tied to the trigger of a laser-emitting rifle pointed at his mouth. The trick took place in a split second. Before the audience and Blaine himself realized what happened, he had fired the shot.
The bullet did hit its mark but shattered the gum guard in the process. In what can only be called a lucky break, Blaine survived with just a laceration to his throat.
“When the bullet struck the cup, there was a high-pitched ringing in my ears and I felt an impact on the back of my throat. I was sure the bullet went right through my head and that I was dead,” Blaine later recalled, as quoted by People. Despite his friends urging him not to repeat the stunt again, David Blaine plans to recreate it in his upcoming world tour.
