China develops futuristic warship that will push the nation’s navy performance. The new Chinese warship debuted during Dubai’s IDEX defense exposition. The event focuses on arms makers around the world and allows them to show off their latest innovations.

China develops futuristic warship for the People’s Liberation Army Navy

China Shipbuilding Trading Company unveiled a model of a trimaran warship. The company stated that the construction of the ship will start in 2017 or 2018. Moreover, they company will construct it for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

Currently, the Chinese Navy have smaller trimaran ships for a noncombat mission. The smaller trimaran ships have the capability of training torpedo recovery, as well as oceanographic research. Meanwhile, the new warship is seemingly futuristic with its all-electric propulsion, two hangar space for helicopters and anti-ship missiles.

The new warship is lighter than China’s Type 054A frigate. The new trimaran had a 76 mm main gun, similar to the Type 054A frigate. It also has vertical launch tubes for 16 or 32 missiles, two close-in weapon systems, and eight anti-ship missile launchers.

A three-hull design can define a trimaran ship. The decks or girders connect one large central hull with two rearward smaller hulls. The Chinese trimaran is about 465 feet long with a beam of 105 feet. The frigate weighs 2,450 tons.

Most noteworthy, the new trimaran will be the first Chinese warship that will utilize an integrated electrical propulsion system (IEPS) that will provide power for driving three pumpjets.

The Chinese trimaran has similarities with the U.S. Navy’s USS Independence

The trimaran’s design is similar to the U.S. Navy’s new USS Independence subclass of the Littoral Combat Ship. The trimaran frigate has a wider deck that can accommodate more aircraft. Moreover, it has unmanned aircraft systems. The Chinese frigate can also reach higher speed to reduce the drag of having three gulls.

The integrated electrical propulsion system will provide the ship’s power to drive its three pumpjets. The frigate will have a top speed of 30 to 35 knots which is slower than the USS Independence at 50 knots top speed.

Once the frigate is done, the PLAN will have a heavily armed warship for operations in the East and South China Seas. In addition, the warship will provide a tYpe 022 stealth missile boats, as well as the Type 056 corvettes. Space and large capacity may also serve as a command center for Chinese boats and drones. The ship will also provide an advanced and flexible warship that can adapt to various conditions presented by the mission at hand.
