Tiny houses that can camouflage into forest landscape are underway for trials in Minnesota in 2018. The abode, dubbed as the “Disappear Retreat” and designed by architect Carly Coulson, is launching into production and will be available to public for purchase in 2019.

Disappear Retreat” is designed to serve as eco-retreat houses to people who wanted dwellings that are highly integrated with nature. The 83-square-foot glass house is transparent and mirrors its surrounding, giving the whole house an impression that it dissolves into the landscape. The mirrors have transparent ultraviolet color that prevents animals from colliding into its walls.

DISAPPEAR RETREAT dissolves our living footprint to zero energy, zero waste, zero water and provides seamless living with nature. The design insinuates into the landscape with a jewel-like form and mirrored glass that takes on the identity of the site in its reflections (transparent ultraviolet color prevents animal collision). A mosaic pattern of thin-film PV integrated into the south glass wall generates all the energy needs from the sun and camouflages the building into the surroundings like a spotted forest animal. The universe, stars, and northern lights press close through a frameless glass roof. • A minimalist palette and layout keeps the focus on the beautiful surroundings, offering a meditative experience and the feeling of living outdoors. The sustainable performance is nearly invisible. • The innovative design by the architecture firm COULSON strives for a paradigm shift where low-tech, low-cost, sustainable building is attainable now without sacrificing aesthetics, comfort, or transparency. • The dwelling is designed to meet PASSIVE HOUSE and LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE, the most rigorous targets in the world, for cold climates from Chicago to Calgary. It requires no active heating or cooling. • www.coulson.co/disappear-retreat/ • @disappear_retreat

Architect Coulson, the brain behind the design, said the dwelling will provide a sense of immersion in nature, allowing owners to recharge their minds and keep their creativity flowing while they work. She has intended for the abode to be minimalist and sustainable. The house has almost zero environmental footprints.

“Art, literature, music, and poetry influence the sense of place, we are striving to achieve [this]. Exploring surreal, transcendental, nouveau, abstract, bauhaus, minimalist, classical, and experimental universes,” Ms Coulson explained.

DISAPPEAR RETREAT dissolves our living footprint to zero energy, zero waste, zero water and provides seamless living with nature. • Imagine it is -25°F on a typical winter morning in northern Minnesota, yet no mechanical heating is required. Reducing the peak heating load by 95% to just 100 watts (1 light bulb) using passive methods is a critical strategy to achieve zero energy. • A minimalist palette and layout keeps the focus on the beautiful surroundings, offering a meditative experience and the feeling of living outdoors. Construction of prototypes is already underway in a forest in Minnesota. It will initially serve as a non-profit residency dwelling for artistic and scientific professionals and for institutions engaging in public outreach on sustainable building and climate change awareness. People who are interested to test-drive the designs will also be accommodated for an overnight stay.

As for public purchase availability by 2019, all the locations for “Disappear Retreat” will be evaluated with regard to climate and sustainability. Ideally, the glass houses will be constructed at the edge of a tree clearing to maximize solar energy.
