The biological mother of Zahara Jolie Pitt, Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, wants to reconnect with her child. Lebiso has made it clear that she does not wish to take her daughter away from her celebrity parents. Rather, she just wanted her to know that she has another mother in Ethiopia who loves her just as much.
Zahara Pitt Adoption Background
Zahara’s birth mother lives in a small town in central Ethiopia, in the midst of extreme poverty. Lebiso’s daughter was the result of a sexual attack she suffered years ago, which led to her pregnancy. After that, she was abandoned by her relatives and left to earn a living on her own. When the going got too tough to bear, Lebiso fled, leaving her daughter behind.
When Angelina Jolie ad Brad Pitt adopted Zahara 12 years ago, she was just 6 months old and her name was “Yemasrech.” Jolie and Pitt were told that Zahara’s mother had died of AIDS and malnutrition reported Daily Mail. It was only back in 2007 that the existence of Lebiso became known to the recently split couple, when she sat down for an interview.
However, no efforts were made by Jolie or Pitt to reach out to Lebiso or help her out with financial help. In the meantime, Lebiso continued to live in extreme poverty, surviving off just 15 pounds a month. Despite struggling to make ends meet and living in a one-room shelter devoid of toilet facilities, Lebiso made it clear that she does not want any money from Jolie or Pitt.
Zahara’s Biological Mother Wants To Speak To Her
The only thing that Lebiso yearned for is some sort of a connection with her only daughter. “Angelina has been more of a mother to her than I have ever been. She has been with her since she was a baby, but that does not mean I do not miss her,” she said. The only way Lebiso had able to keep track of her daughter is by occasionally going online and getting updates from her brother who lives abroad.
Hence, Lebiso implored Jolie to at least let her talk to Zahara, if not physically meet her. Even though it was unclear as to whether Zahara knows about her birth mother, every adopted child is by law free to track down their biological parents when they turn 18. However, it would be four more years before Zahara can exercise this right.
Even though Lebiso understands that Zahara speaks a different language than her, she would love the chance to talk to her. “I would ask Angelina to let me speak with her. I do not think it is too much to ask,” she said, reported Mirror. As for Jolie-Pitt divorce, she doubts if Zahara would be affected by it all. Nevertheless, she expressed the wish for Zahara to stay with Angelina Jolie.
