As the release date for Alien: Covenant draws near, rumors about important characters continue to circle the air. The most infamous theory focused on Katherine Waterston’s Daniels. Rumor has it that Daniels is the mother of the Sigourney Weaver’s iconic character Ellen Ripley in the 1979 sci-fi horror classic Alien.
Alien: Covenant director debunks the theory on Daniels and Ripley
For the uninitiated, Alien: Covenant serves as a prequel to the 1979 film. It would mean that the characters in the upcoming film are older than the characters from the 1979 Alien. Since the film’s production began, fans theorize that Daniels could be Ripley’s mother. However, Ridley Scott shot down the rumors about Daniels and Ripley.
In a recent Covenant screening, Scott disproved the theory. During an interview at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, Scott put the rumors to rest once and for all. He said that Daniels is her own character and does not share any connections to Ripley. If they have any connection, it could be the fact that Daniels is another strong female character.
Despite disproving the theory, Scott revealed that there had been some discussions about the relations between the two characters during pre-production. The director stated, “No. That was probably way back when. ‘Should she be the daughter of Ripley?’ I said ‘no.’ She’s herself.”
Scott’s highly anticipated film has clear connections with Prometheus, his last installment in the Alien franchise, prior to the Covenant. The Covenant is set ten years after the previous film. This is the reason why the colony ship Covenant will encounter a strange planet inhabited with android David (Michael Fassbender). David was an android who was formerly a part of the doomed Prometheus. Aside from the Xenomorphs, there is no confirmation on any tangible connections between the Alien: Covenant and the 1979 film.
Ripley and Daniels connection: Both are strong female characters
In spite of the fact that Daniels is not Ripley’s mother, fans can see the definite comparison between the two characters. Waterston admitted herself that she could see the similarities of her character with Ripley. Both women are natural-born leaders. The actress also stated that the characters of the original film inspired the current cast to foster a group chemistry.
Having Daniels as Ripley’s mother would be great but fans and movie analysts think that it is best that Scott did not overdo the connections of the films. If Daniels was truly the mother of Ripley, a lot of potential will be taken away from Waterston’s character. Moreover, fans might set high expectations on Daniels. Scott wanted Daniels to be her own distinctive character instead of leaving under the shadow of Ripley’s legacy in the last film.
