Spider-Man Homecoming vs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Data Suggests More People Are Waiting For Tom Holland

Comic Book Movies

The year 2017 will see the exciting Spider-Man Homecoming vs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 face-off. Sony-Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming dominated social media buzz since the last quarter of 2016. In December 2016, the film garnered an impressive 612,000 new conversations. Since then, the film soared to new heights and continued to dominate social media buzz. A new data gathered from social media revealed that the film remained to be the most trending film topic. The data implied that fans are anticipating the Spider-Man film more than the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to dominate the box-office sales

Fans expect a load of superhero films this year which include DC and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU will release a lot of superhero films which already garnered public attention. The Marvel films slated this year are Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5 and Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7.

Despite being part of the same franchise, fans can sense the competition between the three Marvel films. Fans know that Marvel films are always successful in the box office sales. Even Thor: Ragnarok is gaining widespread recognition. However, among the three films, critics would expect that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will dominate the social media chatter. The film smashed box office sales in 2014. In November 2014, the film became the highest grossing movie of the year. While both Thor and Spider-Man did well in the box office, the Guardians of the Galaxy was the one who received major recognition. However, the data seemed to be different from the expectations.

Spider-Man Homecoming vs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Which film won the social media buzz?

A recent data from Brandwatch revealed that social media users talked more about Spider-Man: Homecoming than other films. Brandwatch gathered the data from November 1, 2016 until January 11, 2017. Brandwatch tracked the mentions for the superhero films in 2017. In order to gather factual data without any misinterpretation due to prequel mentions, Brandwatch focused on searching social media mentions talking specifically about the film and not the comics.

The data revealed that from November to January, the social media sphere was packed with buzz about the Spider-Man Homecoming. The upcoming film had over 188, 750 mentions while the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 only had 89,108 mentions. Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok had a measly 33,968 mentions. Not only did Spider-Man topped MCU’s films, the film is also ahead the other superhero films in the DC universe. Based from the information gathered, it is safe to assume that the most-anticipated superhero film in 2017 would be the Spider-Man Homecoming.

However, this fact does not remain unchallenged. The response could be different from January 12 onward. Moreover, the data cannot guarantee the film’s box office success. The true measure of the film’s success lies on the box office sales or possible recognition from prestigious award-winning bodies. Spider-Man: Homecoming has yet to prove that it will truly be the top earner this year.
